Some
Old Guy
I Heard Butterflies
I gaze through the mirror
I married young, a
replacement
darkly
for you. When we
bicycled
and behold in the reflection:
you stopped my fragmentation.
generations
And then you disappeared. Bicycle
a step ahead.
with me again. You
have not
With heads now hoary
diminished in me.
they have faces wrinkled
with wisdom formed
by years
of learning to love
Absorbed
the sometimes unlovable
without condition,
You will not call me.
and by the transformation
of worry
I am married. It’s been
into peace.
Now fifty,
long since your voice
Finally
I am willing to concede:
accumulated inside me.
I am willing to appreciate
that some old guy
Call me. Your voice
is really
someone special,
is washing away.
because of
hard won
I want you to call,
humanness.
I sense I too am winning,
and then your voice
though uncertain
and fearful
will wash away again.
of the reward,
as I behold my reflection
in that of others
a step ahead.
