On Border Walls
by Donald Sharp
When I step aside from my life of comfort
of safety
of privilege
I touch into the harsh
day to day reality that exists
for much, indeed most,
of the world's inhabitants.
The devastation
the rape of customs
of cultures
of individuals
The anguish of those
those whose lives have been destroyed
by machetes
by IEDs
by "bunker busters"
The hopelessness of those
those beaten and buried in pain
by loss
her son
his sister -
the kid the mean old man liked -
the uncle, exploded
and his nieces and nephews
Gone!
All those kids!
And all those American kids!
All those olive trees destroyed
to build a wall
All those myths destroyed
about "give me your poor
give me your huddled masses, etc."
All those myths laid to rest
by your own little jailhouse wall.
Oh, yeah, I know -
It's to keep something out
But, oh boy!
I wish we were considering
What this wall is holding in!
